How to Design a Foyer, Entryway, Mudroom, Sunroom and Porch

The foyer, entryway, mudroom, sunroom, and porch are all spaces that essentially greets you when entering a home. It’s the place that often welcomes guests or entertains them or both. Depending on the size of your home, you can have an entryway or a foyer, or an entryway and a mudroom, or you can have a foyer, a mudroom, a sunroom, and even a porch! Each type of room serves a purpose and there are many ways you can utilize each space. Here are their functions and how to effectively design a foyer, entryway, mudroom, sunroom, and porch. 
Foyer Function

Foyer

The foyer is the formal welcoming space for your guests. It is an elegant introduction into your home with either a  stylish chandelier or high end accessories or both. It should look bright and clean, not usually a place for open storage to hang your bags or coats or keep your shoes. If you need a surface area to drop your keys or bag, incorporate a decorative console table in your foyer. Neatly keep your belongings in one small area that won’t distract you or your guests from admiring the other fancy fixtures you have in the space. 
Entryway Function

Entryway

The entryway is usually smaller and not as traditional and fancy as a foyer. It flows directly into the next room of the house and has a more casual energy. At an entryway, you can find storage spaces for your shoes, jackets, bags, keys, mail, etc. 

Mudroom Function

Mudroom

A mudroom is a room in the house that has direct access to the outside. It’s a separate space to store all outdoor belongings that would typically get the entryway or foyer dirty, like muddy boots, raincoats, gym bags, backpacks, sports accessories like helmets, baseball cleats, balls, etc. It’s equipped with heavy duty mats and storage spaces, where dirt and mud are accepted.
 
Sunroom Function

Sunroom

A sunroom has a variety of functions, it can be a second dining area, a relaxing reading room, or even an indoor gardening space. It is surrounded by glass windows and screens and can be accessed through the inside and outside of the house. During the summer time, a sunroom can get pretty warm because of the exposed natural sunlight, but during the winter it can be the perfect place to relax and watch the rain. Depending on how you use your sunroom, make sure all upholstery and rugs can withstand direct sunlight, heat, and humidity.

 
Porch Function

Porch

A porch is an extension of the home that has it’s own roof and usually located in the front or side of the house. Depending on the size of the porch, it can be an entertaining space for guests, it can be transformed into an outdoor dining area, and it can also be just a space to welcome guests into your home.
