The 5 Elements of Feng Shui and How to Use Them in Your Home
There are 5 elements of Feng Shui – Earth, Water, Wood, Fire, and Metal. In Feng Shui, these 5 elements manipulate specific kinds of energy. For example, fire represents passion and enthusiasm. All 5 elements should be equally present in a space to create a well balanced environment. Having too much of one element in a room can generate a chaotic flow of energy. For instance, an excessive amount of wood furniture in a living room can cause a heavy and dark atmosphere. Here are the 5 elements of Feng Shui and how to use them in your home.
Water
In Feng Shui, water affects purification, movement, and the flow of emotions. Aquariums, fountains, photos or paintings of water, and curvy furniture or decorations, are all different ways you can incorporate water into your home. Display only calming photos or paintings of water, not rough storms. Water inspires the balance and flow in your space, and exhibiting wild unsettling waves can cause chaotic or an overabundance of uncontrollable energy.
Wood
Wood symbolizes new life, creativity, and growth. If you don’t have wood in your home, the energy in your space feels lifeless and the flow of energy becomes stagnant. Having too much wood can make your home feel cramped and dark. Balance the wood elements throughout your home, with houseplants, plant-based fabrics like cotton and linen, and wood furniture like bamboo and oak.
Metal
The presence of metal in your home influences mental clarity and focus, structure, and organization. Metal can be represented by anything made out of metal – like gold, silver, or copper – light fixtures, furniture, and decorations. An organized space is also another way to represent metal. The lack of metal can cause disruption in your focus or ability to stay on top of things. An overabundance of metal can lead to overreactions and critically analyzing everything.
Fire
In Feng Shui, fire is related with passion and enthusiasm. You can bring fire into your home with candles, natural sunlight, or furniture and decorations that have shades of red and yellow. A balance of fire elements can inspire creativity and spark enthusiasm.
Earth
Earth signifies stability and balance in your relationships, career, and your daily life. Furniture and accessories with Earth tones, like brown, cream, and tan, are considered Earth elements. Introduce Earth elements into your home if you want to feel more grounded. But be careful, an overflow of Earth elements can create depression.
