5 Ways to Prevent Damage to Your Wood Dining Table
Solid wooden dining tables are a great investment because they can last about 10 years or more depending on how well you take care of them. Besides keeping it clean and using coasters, tablecloths, and placemats to protect the surface of your table, there are other things you can do to help maintain the look and quality of your wooden table. Here are 5 easy ways to prevent damage to your dining table.
Keep your dining table away from direct heat.
Don’t put your wooden dining table next to the fireplace, heater vent, or radiator. Heat can dry out the wood, causing your dining table to warp and crack overtime.
Avoid direct sunlight.
Just like heat, keep your dining table away from direct sunlight. If you have windows next to your dining table, cover them with curtains to help protect it from ultraviolet light. Prolonged UV exposure can cause chemical changes in the wood which will result in discoloration and fading.
Keep your wooden table in a climate controlled environment.
Especially, if your table is solid wood, extreme changes in humidity can change the shape of the wood. Keep your home temperature consistent throughout the winter and summer.
Polish your wooden dining table twice a year.
Polishing your dining table is like bringing your wooden table back to life. Clean your table and make sure it is completely dry before applying furniture polish. Avoid using furniture polish that contains waxes and silicones! Use a microfiber cloth to apply and wipe away the polish.
Fill in nicks and scratches.
Typically, a dining table is used at least once or twice everyday, so it’s bound to get a few nicks and scratches overtime. If the dent is shallow and depending on the shade of the wood, you can fill it in with marker, shoe polish, or coffee grounds.
