5 Pet Friendly Houseplants That are Safe for Your Furry Friends
If you have pets, it’s very important to have non-toxic houseplants in your home. There are many houseplants that can be harmful to your furry loved ones if ingested – like aloe plants, lilies, and jade plants. All plants have varying degrees of toxicity, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. There are many houseplants that are safe for your pets and also bring beautiful colors and shapes into your home decor. Here are 5 pet friendly houseplants:
Spider Plant
For houseplant first timers, the Spider Plant is known to be one of the easiest houseplants to take care of. Not only are they pet friendly, they are also drought tolerant and produce tiny little white flowers. Spider Plants thrive in humid conditions, like on a bright bathroom windowsill, but can also tolerate almost any condition with just some sunlight.
Calathea Plant
Also known as the Prayer Plant, their leaves come in a variety of shapes, colors, and patterns. They make beautiful additions on a bookshelf, end table, or in any bedroom. They grow up to 6 to 12 inches tall and require medium to low indirect lighting. Calathea plants need to be watered frequently. Do not let the top layer of the soil dry out, but also never let a pool of water sit on top of the soil.
String of Hearts
String of Hearts have delicate heart-shaped leaves that gracefully hang over their pots. Display your string of hearts plant on a macrame plant hanger in indirect sunlight. The best way to water these plants is to submerge 1/4th of the pot in a container filled with warm water for about 10 minutes and let the water drain to avoid root rot. String of Hearts do not survive very long in completely dry soil, so keep the soil moist.
Wandering Dude
The Wandering Dude plant, scientifically called Tradescantia, is known for their attractive bright purple or pink leaves. They require bright, indirect sunlight and consistently moist soil, but be careful not to overwater. Display your Wandering Dude plant in a hanging pot so you can watch it’s bright colorful leaves cascade over the pot.
Air Plants
Air Plants are pet friendly, low maintenance, and require no soil. You can display your Air Plants in an open glass terrarium. Water your Air Plants by soaking the leaves in room temperature water for 5 to 10 minutes. Then gently shake their leaves to remove the excess water and hang them upside down to dry. Your plant needs to be completely dry before placing them back into the glass terrarium.
